BACKGROUND | ||
Interleukin 16, also named lymphocyte chemoattractant factor (LCF), was originally identified as a CD8+ T-cell-derived chemoattractant for CD4+ cells. IL-16 is a pleiotropic cytokine that functions as a chemoattractant, a modulator of T cell activation, and an inhibitor of HIV replication. IL-16 stimulates a migratory response in cd4+ lymphocytes, monocytes, and eosinophils. IL-16 functions exclusively attributed to the secreted C-terminal peptide, while the N-terminal product may play a role in cell cycle control. The roduct of IL16 undergoes proteolytic processing, which is found to yield two unctional proteins. IL-16 precursor protein has been detected in the lysates of various cells including mitogen stimulated PBMCs. The biological activities ascribed to IL-16 are reported to be dependent on the cell surface expression of CD4, suggesting that IL-16 is a CD4 ligand. | ||

Recombinant Mouse IL-16 Protein was determined by SDS-PAGE with Coomassie Blue, showing a band at 18-20 kDa. | Fully biologically active determined by the dose dependent migration of THP-1 monocytes, The ED50 for this effect is typically 20 ng/mL. |
